Abortion is the process of removing pregnancy in the uterus
by various methods. Abortion is not only done for voluntary pregnancy. After
miscarriage, it is also used to take the remaining pregnancy parts or to take
conditions such as dead or empty pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy cannot be taken
with an abortion, surgery or drug treatment is required. In fact, abortion is a
term used not only for pregnancy, but also for materials taken from the uterus
in non-pregnant patients. Dilation is used to expand the cervix. Widening of
the cervix is necessary to insert the necessary tools (curette or aspirator,
cannula) to abortion into the uterus. Metal spark plugs with increasing
thickness in the form of thin rods are used for this expansion process. Often,
without the need for this expansion, a thin plastic cannula can be inserted
through the cervix and an abortion procedure can be performed.
How is
abortion done, by what methods?
Vacuum
aspiration curettage:
Abortion is often done today by the vacuum method. Thanks to
the system consisting of tools called plastic injector and thin plastic tubular
cannula, pregnancy is sucked in and sucked in with vacuum. This method is easy,
less risky and less painful. The plastic tip, which is thinner than the pencil,
is inserted through the cervix and sucked in by the vacuum created by the
injector. The procedure often does not exceed 5-10 minutes. It can be done with
local or general anesthesia.
In the past, common curettage tools are metal tools with a
small teaspoon-shaped tip and are rarely used today. Pregnancy is not absorbed
with these tools, the inside of the uterus is scraped and cleaned with the tip
of the curette instrument. Curettes are rarely used because the easier vacuum
method has become widespread. All instruments such as syringes, cannulas and
curettes used in the abortion procedure should be sterile.
Stages of
the abortion procedure:
After the abortion procedure, the week and viability of the
pregnancy are checked by ultrasonography. When starting the abortion procedure,
the patient is taken to the gynecological examination table. The examination
device called speculum is placed inside the vagina. The inside of the vagina is
cleaned with an antiseptic solution. No pain is felt until this stage. Then, general
or local anesthesia is applied according to the patient's request. For general
anesthesia, medications are given through the patient's arm through the serum
and vein. The patient feels like a deep sleep and feels nothing. He is awakened
after the procedure. If local anesthesia is desired, anesthesia is applied with
a needle to the cervix. Then pregnancy is taken with the vacuum method. The
speculum is removed and the patient is awakened if general anesthesia is
applied. It takes 5-10 minutes for the patient to wake up. If a local
anesthetic is applied, it can stand up after resting for 5 minutes. Then the
inside of the uterus is checked again with ultrasound, it is made sure that it
is clean. The patient can rest for a short time (10-20 minutes) after abortion
and return to his daily life. You can easily do every day job. After the
procedure, there may be slight groin pain and a small amount of bleeding.
Medicines
and control:
After the abortion procedure, the patient is usually
prescribed antibiotics and pain medications to use. The patient is usually
called for control 1 week after the procedure. In case of excessive bleeding
and excessive pain, you should immediately contact your doctor without waiting
for 1 week. It is normal for mild pain for 3-5 days and a small amount of
bleeding for a maximum of 1 week. Sometimes bleeding can only last 1-2 days or
there may be no bleeding, these are normal conditions.
On the day of the abortion, the shower is free. For
post-abortion bleeding, you should use tampons and pads.
After an abortion, you should immediately consult a doctor
if:
- Fire height (over 38 degrees)
- Severe pain and cramps that do not go away with pain relief
- If there is excessive bleeding after abortion
- If you have foul-smelling excessive discharge in the days
after abortion
- If the bleeding does not decrease or increase despite 4-5
days after the abortion
