WHAT IS THE REASON FOR APPLYING INDUCED LABOR?

Induced labor is a simple and inexpensive method that can be applied if necessary at first birth or later births. The main purpose in its implementation is to initiate birth or to accelerate the birth that has started. For this purpose, a drug called oxytocin is used in the serum intravenously. However, it is not applied at every birth. Some criteria are required for its implementation. If it is routinely applied at each delivery, cesarean rates may increase especially in the first births, so it should be applied only when necessary.
When is induced labor applied in normal delivery?
- pregnancies past the day
- Early membrane rupture
- Chorioamnionitis: infection in the uterus
- Developmental retardation in the baby
- Rh isoimmunization (development of disease due to blood incompatibility)
- Death of the baby in the womb: A long waiting period of the dead baby in the womb may endanger the health of the mother, so delivery should be accelerated.
- Preeclampsia, eclampsia: Conditions with high blood pressure during pregnancy
- Detachment placenta
- Chronic diseases of the mother
When should induced labor not be applied?
- The mother had previously undergone a surgery with a classical uterine incision. This incision made from the top of the uterus may cause the uterus to tear in subsequent births.
- Transversion of the incision in previous uterine surgery and cesarean section does not constitute a definitive contraindication for artificial pain, but care should also be taken in these patients.
- Placenta previa
- Vasa previa
- Active genital herpes infection
- Cord sagging
- Baby's side in the womb (transverse situs)
- The excess weight of the baby (Macrosomia)
- The baby's head is large due to an anomaly (hydrocephalus)
- The pelvic bones are not considered suitable for birth on examination
Apart from these, in twin, triplet pregnancies, if normal birth is considered, induced labor may be applied. Induced labor should be used with caution in women who have given birth too much (6 or more births). Because the risk of postpartum hemorrhage (atony) increases in these patients. When induced labor is applied necessary and appropriate births, it is a useful application that facilitates birth.
