LUMBAR DISC HERNIA IN PREGNANCY

Lumbar disc hernia in pregnant women is a very rare pathology. Although low back pain is a common complaint during pregnancy, one of the rarest causes is herniated disc.
As the months of gestation progress, the center of gravity of the body changes, especially due to the increase in the weight of the abdomen after the 5th month of pregnancy. In addition, the shape of the female body and spine changes, the bonds are relaxed by the effect of relaxin and similar hormones. These changes in the body of the pregnant woman can cause an increase in the herniated disc. With walking and some movements, pain may increase. In some positions, pain may decrease. Most of the complaints related to herniated disc during pregnancy are relieved after birth.
Diagnosis:
In a pregnant woman, herniated disc is usually detected with suspicion on complaints such as low back pain (sciatica) and difficulty walking. In case of a herniated disc, the most useful examination in addition to the examination is usually MR (emar) imaging method. Withdrawal of MR does not pose any harm in terms of pregnancy and is very useful in diagnosing herniated disc.
Treatment:
Treatment of herniated disc is planned by neurosurgery specialists. Generally, the patient is relieved with treatments such as rest, pain medications and local steroid injection. However, very rarely, in cases of emergency and mandatory back hernia surgery can be performed during pregnancy. The operation can be performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia depending on the situation.
Getting pregnant after hernia surgery:
You should definitely get the recommendations of the neurosurgeon who performs your surgery about getting pregnant after the operation and delivery type (cesarean, normal delivery). While some patients may be allowed to become pregnant, some patients are not allowed due to the risk of hernia recurrence.
