Alcohol is a teratogenic substance that can easily cross the
placenta and hurt the fetus during pregnancy. Therefore, it should not be used
during pregnancy. Alcohol can cause various anomalies in the baby, causing miscarriage
and premature birth or low birth weight. The syndrome that occurs due to the
exposure of the baby to alcohol in the womb is called fetal alcohol syndrome
(FAS). This condition, which can be seen in the spectrum ranging from mild
learning problems to various congenital anomalies, is called fetal alcohol
spectrum disorders (FASD). FAS is seen in 1 in 1000 live births in the world.
"What amount of alcohol is used during pregnancy will
not harm the baby?" The clear answer to the question is unknown, so even a
small amount of rarely taken alcohol should be considered to have harmful
effects on pregnancy and should not be used at all. However, it is known that
as the amount of alcohol used increases, the risk of harm to pregnancy
increases.
Anomalies in
the baby in fetal alcohol syndrome:
- Characteristic face appearance, thin upper lip, short and
upward facing nose, absence of groove (filtum) between the nose and upper lip,
characteristic eyelids
- Micrognathia (small chin)
- Microftalmi (small eyes), strabismus, ptosis
- Vision and hearing problems, recurrent ear infections
- Heart anomalies (ASD, VSD)
- Arm, leg, finger and joint anomalies
- Skeletal system anomalies (scoliosis, vertebral anomalies)
- Growth retardation in the womb and after birth
- Microcephaly (head diameter and brain being small)
- Undescended testicles
- Cleft palate and lip
- Kidney anomalies
- Spinal cord anomalies
- Meningomyelocele, hydrocephalus
- Intellectual retardation
- Hyperactivity, short attention span, memory impairment,
irritability
These effects seen in fetal alcohol syndrome are irreversible
and anomalies that will affect the child for life. To avoid these, you should
completely get away from alcohol as soon as you decide to conceive and continue
this throughout pregnancy. If you are unable to give up alcohol, you should
definitely consult a specialist and get help before conception. If you are
pregnant and use alcohol, you should immediately stop drinking alcohol. The
earlier you leave, the less the baby will be affected.
