Esophagus is the esophagus that extends from mouth to
stomach. In esophageal atresia, a part of the esophagus has not occurred.
Therefore, it is not possible to switch between mouth and stomach, there is
congestion. Yakşalık is a rare anomaly seen in 2500 births. In this anomaly,
there is often a fistula between the esophagus and the trachea. Additional
anomalies in almost half of fetuses with egous atresia include kidney,
intestine, limb, heart, lip, etc. anomalies are seen. There may also be
accompanying chromosomal anomalies. Therefore, it is recommended to investigate
chromosomal anomaly by amniocentesis.
Due to the obstruction in these fetuses, excess water
(polyhydramnios) occurs frequently because the fetus cannot absorb amniotic water.
Apart from the excess water, another condition that draws attention on
ultrasound may be the absence of the stomach that should normally be seen. The
stomach is empty because the fetus cannot swallow fluid and therefore it may
not be visible on ultrasound, but this does not always happen. Sometimes the
stomach may be full and visible due to fluids from the trachea or fluids
secreted by the stomach itself.
If there are no other anomalies accompanying, the prognosis
is better after birth. However, despite the surgery, these babies have a high
mortality rate.
