In this case, while the membrane and placenta forming the
gestational sac are formed, there is no embryo in these structures.
The diagnosis is made by not being able to see the embryo and
heart beats in the weeks that should be seen on ultrasound. The gestational
sac, which looks completely empty, looks black. Therefore it is called blighted
ovum.
Symptoms in
blighted ovum:
Blighted ovum is usually detected by chance, with no
complaints during routine pregnancy examinations. Sometimes the patient can
apply with complaints such as spotting and bleeding. Ultrasound image is very
important in diagnosis. It is not possible to understand that pregnancy is a
blighted ovum only by looking at the patient's symptoms.
When will
Blighted ovum be determined?
If the gestational sac has grown sufficiently, it is clear
that the baby is still blighted ovum. Therefore, it cannot be diagnosed before
the gestational sac grows sufficiently.
Treatment:
In its treatment, blighted ovum should be taken with abortion.
Rarely, if miscarriage occurs, abortion may not be necessary.
Getting
pregnant again after having blighted ovum:
It is enough to wait 2-3 months and be protected during this
period to get pregnant again. It has not been shown that a problem develops in
those who become pregnant before this time. However, it is still recommended to
protect the mother for at least 2 months to recover.
The answer to the question of how many months it takes to
become pregnant again; is the same as a woman who has never conceived. It may
take a few months or as long as 1 year.
Does the
blighted ovum come off in the pregnancy test?
Whether there is an empty pregnancy cannot be understood by
looking at the pregnancy test values. Because the pregnancy test in the urine
and blood (B-HCG test) is positive, meaning it indicates pregnancy. B-HCG, that
is, a high or low pregnancy test value in the blood cannot indicate an empty
pregnancy.
What is the
difference between ectopic pregnancy and blighted ovum? Is it the same?
They are completely unrelated and unlike. In both, it is
impossible to grow pregnancy and give birth to a baby (it can be very, very
rare in ectopic pregnancy). The most important difference is that the empty
pregnancy occurs outside the uterus in the uterus. While the blighted ovum most
often occurs in the abdomen in the tube or ovary, empty pregnancy always occurs
in the uterus, like normal pregnancies. While medication (methotrexate) or
surgery (laparoscopy or open surgery) is used in the treatment of ectopic pregnancy,
curettage is usually applied in the blighted ovum. In Blighted ovum, it is not
necessary to open the abdomen by surgery. Abortion can sometimes be applied
during ectopic pregnancy. However, this is not for pregnancy, it is for the
finalization of the diagnosis. It is not possible to get a pregnancy out of the
uterus during an ectopic pregnancy by abortion.
Can those
who have blighted ovum 2-3 times have a baby?
Blighted ovum can sometimes occur more than once. Having two
or 3 empty pregnancies does not mean that this will happen continuously and
normal pregnancy will never happen. Recurrent miscarriage, etc. in these
patients. tests are done and most patients can have a baby with a normal
pregnancy later.
When should
Blighted ovum be taken? Is abortion a must?
If the diagnosis of blighted ovum is definite and not
miscarriage, it is necessary to completely clean and remove the pregnancy
material in the uterus. For this, aspiration curettage method is generally
used. Rarely, with bleeding, the blighted ovum material may have fallen
completely, thrown out of the uterus. In this case, if it is determined that
the inside of the uterus is completely clean and there are no parts left in the
ultrasound control, abortion may not be necessary. After the diagnosis of
ectopic pregnancy is finalized, abortion should be applied as soon as possible,
at the latest within a day or two. Because bleeding can start at any moment.
Can I have
a blighted ovum in IVF?
Blighted ovum can occur in any type of pregnancy. It may occur
in those who become pregnant spontaneously, become pregnant by using drugs or
needles, vaccinations, and IVF treatments.
