Megalencephaly means that the brain is larger than normal. It
is a greater than normal monitoring of the head of the fetus without
hydrocephalus or a mass in the head. It can be with normal or high intelligence
individuals, or with mental retardation or neural (neurological) damage.
Megalencephaly Beckwit-Wiedemann syndrome may also be a sign
of syndromes such as achondroplasia, neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis.
Megalencephaly can usually be diagnosed by ultrasound.
Rarely, only one half of the brain can be watched large, even
accompanied by growth in one half of the body. Mental and nervous system
problems may develop in these patients.
