Sweeteners are used frequently in foods and beverages called
light or diet today. These substances called artificial sweeteners give flavor
to the product they are added to, but they do not give calories because they do
not contain sugar. Aspartame is the most commonly used of these substances.
Apart from aspartame, there are sweeteners such as sucralose, saccharin,
acesulfam, potassium and stevioside. Side effects of these sweeteners on the mother
and baby have not been shown. However, the fact that side effects have not been
shown to date does not mean they are 100% reliable. For this reason, most
experts recommend not to use it during pregnancy.
Some experiments related to saccharin suggest that it may
increase bladder cancer in the baby. Therefore, they are the most avoided
saccharin.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) are of the opinion that the use of aspartame during
pregnancy and lactation is safe for both mother and baby. It was concluded that
the methanol formed as a result of the destruction of aspartame is an alcohol,
but it is harmless at first, since it is formed at very low levels (it is also
a substance formed as a result of the destruction of fruits).
