In the early weeks of pregnancy and in the months following
pregnancy, the expectant mother may feel abdominal and groin pain from time to
time for various reasons. These pains can have various causes, some of which
are insignificant and do not require treatment, while others are important and
require even hospitalization.
In the first days of pregnancy, and even in the first days
when menstruation is delayed, the feeling of mild discomfort in the abdomen and
groin areas is generally felt by many women.
From the 3rd and 4th months of pregnancy, a sharp pain can be
felt in the groin areas, such as knife stems. This pain can be exacerbated by
moving, suddenly standing up. The reason for this pain is the stretching of the
ligaments and ligaments around the uterus due to the growth of the uterus.
(Round ligament pain) Round ligament pain due to enlargement of the uterus is
usually on the right side but it can be on both sides.
Constipation, bloating and flatulence can also cause
discomfort and pain in the abdomen.
False birth pains, called Braxton-Hicks contractions, can
also cause abdominal pain in the last months of pregnancy. These contractions
differ from real birth pains when they are irregular and mild, and pass with
rest. If such contractions are frequent and severe and do not go away, you
should definitely consult a doctor, it may be a sign of real labor or preterm
labor.
Regardless of the period of pregnancy, you should definitely
consult a doctor immediately in case of any vaginal bleeding accompanied by
pain.
Complaints such as fever, nausea, vomiting, burning while
urinating or blood in the urine accompanying abdominal pain may be caused by
urinary tract infection.
Pain in the upper abdomen (especially in the upper right
liver area) and accompanying headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision may be
a sign of high blood pressure (preeclampsia).
During pregnancy, a feeling of excessive pain may rarely
occur in the pelvis, or pelvis joints. There may be severe pains called pubic
pain due to excessive relaxation in the hormone-dependent joint, especially in
the symphysis pubis region (the joint that corresponds to the region with pubic
hairs in the front). These hormones relax the birth canal to prepare for the
birth of the baby.
Ovarian cysts can also rarely occur during pregnancy and
cause groin pain due to tearing (rupture), sprains (torsion).
There may also be an "unrelated to pregnancy" cause
of groin and abdominal pain during pregnancy. For example, many causes such as
appendicitis, gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis), diverticulitis, stomach
ulcer can be abdominal pain. Therefore, the cause of abdominal pain in
pregnancy should be investigated very carefully, whether it is a normal groin
pain due to pregnancy, pain due to a pregnancy problem or pain related to a
disease not related to pregnancy. Its treatment is planned according to the
cause of the pain.
