Cesarean surgery carries some risks, such as every surgery,
as it is a abdominal surgery, requires general or spinal anesthesia, and
sometimes complications such as more or less bleeding. For this reason, it is
recommended to be done only when necessary. Risks of cesarean surgery for
mother and baby:
- Although it is rarely seen in cesarean surgery, the most
common complications are infection, bleeding and injuries of the pelvic organs
such as the bladder, intestine located close to the uterus. Blood transfusion
may be required in 1-2% of cesarean surgeries due to excessive bleeding. Very
rarely, it may even be necessary to remove the uterus by surgery due to
excessive bleeding.
- The risk of clot formation (deep vein thrombosis, dvt) in
the leg veins after cesarean surgery and the risk of clotting into the lungs is
higher than normal birth.
- One disadvantage of cesarean is that it delays or prevents
the interaction of the mother and baby immediately after birth.
- The mother will recover much later than normal birth after
cesarean. He leaves the hospital later. It takes longer to return to his daily
life and work.
- Pain after cesarean is much more than normal birth.
- Complications such as placenta settling in the cervix or adhesion
to the cervix (previa, detachment, accreta) are more common in the subsequent
births of the mother who underwent cesarean surgery.
- The mother who undergoes cesarean surgery will lose the
chance of giving birth to their next baby with normal birth.
- The risk of having respiratory distress in the baby is
higher after cesarean. During normal delivery, the water in the lungs is thrown
out thanks to the pressure the baby experiences while passing through the birth
canal. However, as this does not happen in cesarean section, respiratory
distress may occur.
- Rarely, complications related to general anesthesia or
spinal, epidural anesthesia may occur.
- The mother who has a cesarean section has a higher risk of
re-hospitalization due to any complications after birth compared to those who
give birth normally.
- Breast sucking success is lower in babies born by cesarean
section.
- Some studies have shown that children born with cesarean
are more likely to have asthma.
- Mothers with cesarean section are at higher risk of having
infertility problems in the future due to the adhesions that may occur due to
the operation in their abdomen.
