The frequency of some complications during pregnancy
increases in overweight (obese) women. The reasons for gaining excess weight
during pregnancy can include causes such as excess calorie diet, inactivity and
not exercising, and genetic factors. Obese mothers are at higher risk of high
blood pressure and diabetes during pregnancy.
Increased
risks in women who are overweight during pregnancy:
- In obese women, the evaluation of the baby with ultrasound
is more difficult, the image worsens.
- Since the fat thickness is high in the skin of the abdomen,
it is difficult to perform interventions such as amniocentesis.
- Obese people are less likely to have a normal progression
of labor, and therefore increase the likelihood of cesarean delivery.
- Obese women have higher frequency of high blood pressure
and preeclampsia during pregnancy.
- Babies of obese mothers are found to be overweight during
pregnancy. Delivery may be difficult due to the large baby.
- Babies of obese mothers are also at higher risk of being
obese in their future lives after birth.
- In obese women, wound healing and return to normal become
more difficult after cesarean as in every surgery.
- Overweight women have a higher risk of miscarriage.
- The risk of premature and premature birth has increased.
- Urinary tract infections are more common in obese
pregnants.
- Breastfeeding problems are more common in obese mothers.
- Neural tube defect (spina bifida, openness in the back) is
more common in the baby.
- The risk of trauma to the baby during birth has increased.
- In babies born from obese mothers, the need to be taken to
the neonatal intensive care unit is more common and the risk of death is higher
in the newborn period.
In order to avoid the above-mentioned risks of obesity and
gaining excess weight during pregnancy, measures such as losing excess weight
before pregnancy, taking calories as much as necessary during pregnancy,
avoiding immobility, and exercising should be taken. It is useful to weigh
frequently to check how much weight has been gained during pregnancy.
The total amount of weight that a woman should gain during
pregnancy until birth is as follows. Here, the weight range that the woman
should gain according to the Body Mass Index (MBI) value is specified. The BMI
value can be obtained simply by dividing the weight by the square meter (kg /
m2). For example, a woman who is 160 cm tall and weighing 65 kilograms has BMI
value calculated by the formula 65 / (1.6x1.6) ie 25.3.
- For women with a BMI less than 20, that is, the recommended
weight to be taken during pregnancy is 12.6 - 28 kilograms.
- Total recommended weight in pregnancy for women with BMI
between 20-25, i.e. normal weight: between 11.5 - 16 kilograms
- Total weight recommended for pregnancy with a BMI value
between 26 and 29, that is, for overweight women: between 7 and 11.5 kilograms
- For women with an BMI value of 30 or more, that is,
overweight (obese), the total weight recommended during pregnancy is 7
kilograms.
