The gallbladder is a sac-shaped organ that is used to digest
pear-shaped oil located under the liver and stores and concentrates the bile
synthesized in the liver. When fat containing foods reach the intestine, the
gallbladder is stimulated and bile is secreted into the intestine through the
ducts.
Inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis) during
pregnancy is a rare condition (0.3%).
In acute, suddenly developing cases, the treatment is through
intravenous fluids, emptying the stomach and stopping oral intake during this
process. If this treatment is not answered, removal of the gallbladder
(cholecystectomy) may be considered. The surgery is less likely to cause harm
to pregnancy between the 3rd and 7th months. But it increases the risk of
miscarriage in the first 3 months. It increases the risk of preterm labor after
the 7th month of pregnancy. Therefore, surgery should be delayed with other
treatment methods in cases resistant to treatment developed after the 7th month
of pregnancy.
