PREGNANCY AND EPILEPSY

Epilepsy occurs as a result of abnormal electrical stimulation at the nerve endings. Involuntary contractions and occasional loss of consciousness may occur.
The most important dangers that can be seen due to pregnancy in women with epilepsy are the increase in the frequency of seizures and congenital anomalies that can be seen in the baby. On average, 7% of children born from epileptic mothers have significant congenital anomalies. This rate is 3% in normal society. There are studies showing that the increase in this rate depends on the drugs used rather than the disease itself. In these children; cleft palate, cleft lip, mental retardation, low birth weight, increased risk of epilepsy. The expectant mothers do not continue the drug during pregnancy, fearing that the baby may be harmed. Seizures that may occur when the drug is not used; physical injury, retardation or even death can result for the baby. Therefore, women with epilepsy should be followed up by an obstetrician and a neurologist during and after pregnancy.
Epileptic women must get counseling by an obstetrician and neurologist before becoming pregnant. The drugs they use and their doses should be rearranged.
What should be considered during pregnancy?
Controls should be regularly visited. Factors such as insomnia, fatigue, hunger may increase the frequency of seizures. Folic acid supplements should be taken.
Although women with epilepsy have a slightly higher risk than normal women, this risk is still low. Most women with epilepsy can give birth to a healthy baby. Detailed ultrasounds and anomaly scans, if the controls performed during pregnancy are made regularly, provide early diagnosis of many injuries that may occur in your baby before birth.
Increased risks in pregnancy of epilepsy patients:
- There may be an increase in the frequency of congestive anomalies depending on the drugs used. Medicines with the least risk should be used. If there is a seizure if the drug is not used, this will be risky for the baby.
- Preeclampsia develops more frequently.
 - Cesarean rate is higher.
- When epilepsy patients become pregnant, the frequency of seizures does not change in more than half of the patients. The frequency of seizures increases in approximately 20 percent of patients, and the frequency of seizures decreases in 20 percent of patients.
- In case of seizure (convulsion), acidosis and fetal heart beat may occur. Dangerous consequences for the mother and fetus can occur.
