Amniotic fluid is the fluid that the baby is in. In some
cases, it is observed that while it increases, in some cases it decreases.
Amniotic fluid index, the amount of amniotic fluid, is determined by ultrasound
measurements. Amniotic fluid amount is measured from the mother's womb at the 4
corners of the uterus and summed. If the total amount of ASI is 5 cm and below,
it is considered abnormal and if it is between 5-8 cm, it is considered
decreased. If it is more than 250, it is considered as excess (polyhydramnios).
The average amount in a term pregnancy is 4000 ml and 2800 ml
of this is in the fetus, 400 ml in the placenta and 800 ml in the amniotic
fluid. While the average volume is 200 ml in the 16th week of pregnancy, it reaches
1000 ml in the 3rd trimester and decreases gradually, after the 38th week, with
an average of 150 ml per week.
ASI is a chronic marker of fetal well-being. During chronic
hypoxia, due to the redistribution of fetal blood flow (centralization), the blood
flow of the fetal kidney decreases, the formation of fetal urine decreases, and
oligohydroamniosis develops over time.
