TOMOGRAPHY (CT, BT) AND MRI IN PREGNANCY

There is no harm for MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) during pregnancy because it does not emit radiation. Rarely, some anomalies in the baby can be used for diagnostic purposes.
Computed tomography (CT, CAT) can be harmful for the baby when applied too much in pregnancy because it emits radiation in the amounts listed below. It is not withdrawn during pregnancy, unless it is urgent and vitally important for the mother. While no harm from exposure to radiation below 5 rad (5000 mrad) during pregnancy has been shown, various radiation related damages may occur above this dose.
The dose (mrad) to which the fetus is exposed on computed tomography:
- Chest CT (Computed tomography): 30 mrad
- Abdominal CT (Computed tomography): 250 mrad
