If an episiotomy was performed at normal delivery, the mother
should continue to check and care for the stitches at home after being sent
home. The stitches are checked and dressed in the hospital before they are sent
home.
The pain and discomfort associated with the stitches will
decrease a little more each day and the discomfort will completely disappear in
about a week.
The area with episiotomy, that is, the area between the
vagina and the breech, is called perineum.
What the
mother should pay attention to about epiotomy stitches:
- The perineum should be kept clean and dry.
- After the big and small toilet, the perineum and the seams
should be washed with plenty of water and dried. The antiseptic solution should
be applied to the sutures after the ablution.
- Cleaning with toilet paper should be done from front to
back. Making it from the back to the front will carry the germs onto the seam
area.
- Cold application (ice bag, etc.) to the seam area is not
always routine unless specifically stated by your doctor. Sometimes excessive
edema, hematoma, etc. can be applied in cases.
- If your doctor has prescribed antibiotics, pain
medications, and other medications, you should use them regularly.
- Slight swelling often occurs in the suture area and
resolves spontaneously in a few days. If the swelling becomes excessive,
painful, becomes purple, you should contact your doctor immediately.
- If there is a very bad smell from the stitching area, you
should contact your doctor immediately. This may be a sign of infection and
inflammation.
- Today, the birth incision is almost always repaired with
self-melting stitches. Your doctor will inform you about this. Self-melting
stitches are not removed, they dissolve and fall off within approximately 8-10
days after birth.
- It may also be useful to check the stitches with a mirror
every two days after birth. If some of the stitches show large gaps between the
opening and the wound lips, a doctor should be consulted immediately. If
opening is detected in the sutures, it can be repaired by applying one or two
stitches again with local anesthesia.
- If there is a lot of discomfort in pain, it may be useful
to fill a basin with warm water and sit inside or put a hot compress on the
seam.
- The pads used for vaginal bleeding that normally comes
after birth should not be used until they are replaced for a very long time. It
should be changed every 6 hours at the latest.
- Long standing should be avoided, may increase swelling in
the episiotomy area.
- It is necessary to avoid constipation. For this, it is
useful to consume lots of vegetables and fruits. If you still have serious
constipation, you can ask your doctor for medication advice.
- Your doctor will usually make a check-up appointment one
week to ten days after birth. You should definitely go to the control, it will
be checked if the stitches are fully healed during the control.
Sexual
intercourse:
It is impossible and unfavorable to have sexual intercourse
before the stitches heal completely. You should not start sexual intercourse
unless your doctor approves that the stitches heal completely without problems
and that you can have sexual intercourse. Generally, sexual intercourse can be
started one month after stitched births.
