The increase in darkening, i.e. the increase in pigmentation
during pregnancy, is called the pregnancy mask (chloasma, melasma) (chloasma
gravidarum). It often disappears after birth. It occurs when pregnancy hormones
increasing during pregnancy increase melanotropin substance. Although it is
mostly on the face, forehead, nose, and cheeks, darkening may occur in the
nipples, armpits and genital area. Birth control pills rarely cause such spots.
Cosmetic products such as some make-up, cologne, perfumes, soap and
moisturizers can also cause such stains, especially after sun contact.
-VARICOSE VEINS IN PREGNANCY
In the pregnancy mask, spots occur only in areas exposed to
the sun. Usually the spots are brown, blue.
Overexposure to the sun can cause these spots to increase, so
avoid sun exposure too much and apply sunscreen cream on the face. Sunscreens
should include both UV-A and UV-B protection. UVA can also pass through glass,
so sunscreen should be worn regularly all day even if it is not taken out. Stains
in the pregnancy mask may go away after birth, and may continue for years or
even for life. If the spots do not disappear after birth, it is necessary to
contact a dermatologist.
In treatment, it is important to avoid sun exposure, using
sunscreen creams, wearing hats and glasses, and drugs and cosmetics that
increase sun sensitivity. Apart from these, medications recommended by
dermatologists may be required. Drugs or laser treatments that reduce the
pigment production of melanocytes and lighten the spots can be used with the
advice of dermatologists. In dark-skinned people, treatment is more difficult
and takes longer and the risk of recurrence is higher.
