The body's need for oxygen increases during pregnancy.
However, breathing becomes difficult due to the womb growing upwards and
compression of the breast in the following months. The hormone, especially
progesterone, which increases during pregnancy, stimulates the respiratory
center in the brain and triggers breathing more frequently. For this reason,
the number of breaths given in one minute increases during pregnancy and the
lungs receive more oxygen.
In the last weeks of pregnancy, as the baby enters the birth
canal, the uterus goes down and the breast compression effect decreases. The
expectant mother feels comfortable breathing these weeks.
