NUMBNESS IN HANDS IN PREGNANCY

During pregnancy, there may be numbness, tingling, burning, pain, tingling sensations in the hands from time to time and even more severe complaints such as weakness and numbness are accompanied. The patient expresses that these complaints occur especially on the fingers between the thumb and the ring finger, and says that he has difficulty in holding an item and even dropped it in his hand. These complaints develop due to nerve compression in the wrist called Carpal Tenul Syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is not only seen in pregnant women, it can occur in anyone, especially in people who operate their hands and wrists with repetitive movements (such as continuous computer, using a typewriter). It is seen during pregnancy especially after the 5th month because after these months, body weight gain, water retention and swelling increase. About 20% of pregnant women have carpan tunnel syndrome. After childbirth, mostly complaints pass.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition characterized by complaints such as numbness, tingling, weakness in the hands developed due to compression of the median nerve passing through the wrist. A tunnel-like formation in which the median nerve passes through the wrist is called a carpal tunnel. This nerve may get stuck with increasing water retention in the body and increasing weight during pregnancy. The median nerve provides the feeling of feeling across the thumb, forefinger and middle finger, and half of the ring finger. In addition, the muscular nerve nourishes the muscle that provides the inward closing function of the spike. Therefore, when the median nerve is pinched, these fingers lose sensation and there is weakness in the thumb. Other fingers of the hand are not affected because other nerves feed them.
Diagnosis and treatment is done by orthopedic specialists. In the treatment, applications such as bandages and splints are performed to keep the wrist in a straight position. Sometimes steroid drugs are injected into the wrist. In serious cases where improvement cannot be achieved with these methods, the nerve is saved from pinching with a small surgical operation on the wrist.
To avoid carpal tunnel syndrome during pregnancy, it is necessary to reduce water retention in the body and reduce salt. It is necessary to avoid gaining excess weight. If there is a job that makes the wrist constantly working, it is necessary to rest occasionally. It is necessary to avoid lying on the hands.
