On average, it takes 4-6 weeks to start sexual intercourse
after birth. Couples may have intercourse earlier than this period if they
wish. This will not harm the mother or father, but couples may experience discomfort
in the relationship as the mother's body and vagina are not fully returned to
normal. Making love without intercourse after birth is not prohibited, unless
it is uncomfortable.
Is there
pain in sexual intercourse after normal delivery?
Discomfort may be felt if intercourse is made before this
time due to bleeding and discharge that lasts 4-6 weeks after birth. The
puerperant woman may not want to have sexual intercourse. In addition, patients
with stitches in the vagina take an average of 2 weeks to heal. Having
intercourse before the stitches heal can cause extreme pain and damage the
stitches. Therefore, patients with episiotomy stitches should not start sexual
intercourse without permission from the doctor. It is normal to have dryness in
the vagina for several months after birth. If this is very disturbing to you,
you can consult with your doctor for proper medication or use products that are
used for sexual lubricants without consulting your doctor.
Does having
sex while on puerperant reduce breast milk?
Having sex or making love does not reduce breast milk, but
the relationship can cause the mother to feel pain.
Is normal
bleeding in the relationship in normal births?
It is normal for a woman who gives birth to bleeding or brown
spotting or discharge during or after intercourse in the weeks after birth.
However, it should not be after the postpartum period, that is, after 6 weeks.
If, after this period, bleeding or staining still occurs in the relationship, a
doctor's examination is essential. There may be a problem in the cervix or the
area of birth stitching.
Things to
consider in normal postpartum relationship:
After birth, especially in nursing mothers, there may be
dryness in the vagina due to the hormone prolactin, in this case, lubricating
gels can be used. If there is foul-smelling discharge and itching, the
infection (inflammation) in the vagina may have developed, causing the woman to
feel pain in the relationship. In this case, a doctor's examination and, if
necessary, drug treatment are essential. The puerperant woman should not try to
clean the inside of the vagina with water or any substance after the
intercourse. This can cause infection by disrupting the vagina flora.
Is there a
risk of getting pregnant after having a birth?
After normal delivery or cesarean, especially in those who do
not breastfeed very closely, there is a risk of re-pregnancy with intercourse.
It should not be misleading that the menstruation has not yet started, because
pregnancy may occur even if the menstruation does not start. For this reason,
it is recommended to discuss the methods of protection after birth with your
doctor and start to be protected with the method that suits you best.
