How long does it take to get pregnant again after giving
birth? How soon after birth should I get pregnant again? How many years should
there be a difference between the two children? such questions are among the
most frequently asked questions of patients who give birth and plan pregnancy
again.
When we say how many breaks should be given between
pregnancies, the specified period is the time from the day of birth to a second
pregnancy (interpregnancy interval, IPI). What we mean here is not the time
between the onset of both pregnancies.
In the researches, the patients taking short or long breaks
were compared in terms of the time between two normal births or the time
between two cesarean sections. In some of the studies, an increase in risk was
found below and above the optimum time. Although there is a variation between
studies, the interval of generally less than 2 years and the interval of more
than 5 years showed an increase in the following risks during the second
pregnancy. In the second pregnancy, which occurs with an interval of less than
6 months, the risk increase was found more.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that the
interval between pregnancies is shorter than 2 years, which increases some
risks. For this reason, he suggested that women who have a child under the age
of 35 should take a break of at least 2 years for the second child. She
suggested that women with a child over the age of 35 take a 1-year break before
conceiving the second child. The reason for determining the duration as 1 year
over 35 years is that as the age progresses, the fertility capacity decreases
in women and the frequency of some complications related to pregnancy
increases.
When the
period between pregnancies is short, the following risks increase in the second
pregnancy:
- Anemia in mother
- The risk of preterm delivery and PPROM increases when the
time between pregnancies is short. There are studies reporting that there is an
increased risk if pregnancy intervals are longer than 5 years.
- Congenital anomaly
- Low birth weight, SGA
- Autism
- stillbirth, neonatal death
The fact that the mother who got pregnant early will stop
breastfeeding her first baby, as this will shorten the duration of
breastfeeding of the first baby, which will have a negative effect.
How long to
wait for pregnancy again after a miscarriage?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a 6-month
break for re-pregnancy after a miscarriage.
How long
should there be between cesarean births?
The optimum interval recommended after cesarean delivery does
not differ from normal birth. It is recommended to take a break of at least 2
years after a cesarean.
