ANENCEPHALY

Anencephaly and spina bifida form the anomaly group called "neural tube defects". Neural tube defects occur at a rate of 1-2 per 1000 births. In order to prevent these anomalies, each pregnant woman should use a vitamin called 0.4 mg folic acid daily before the pregnancy and until the 3rd month of pregnancy. The frequency of neural tube defects decreases with the use of folic acid.
Anencephaly skull is an anomaly characterized by the upper part of cranium and the absence of the brain. It is seen 1 in 1000 births. The absence of cranium, that is, cranium, is called perania or exencephaly (exencephaly). Anencephaly is easily recognized by ultrasound in the 3rd - 4th months of pregnancy. The reason is not known clearly. In the second - third trimesters of pregnancy, polyhydramnios (increase in amniotic water) develops by 50%.
Pregnancy needs to be terminated. 75% of anencephalic fetuses are born still, and babies born alive are impossible to survive, those alive during childbirth die within a few hours.
In the case of anencephaly, the level of AFP (MS-AFP) increases in the mother's blood.
