Body temperature in pregnant women is normally around 37
degrees like other people. This temperature rises above 38.3 degrees is called
high fever. Although high fever is almost always caused by infections,
excessive exercise, being in places such as sauna, hot water, and baths can
also cause high fever. It is necessary to avoid being in such places during
pregnancy and it is absolutely necessary to consult a doctor immediately when
fever is felt. You should avoid taking antipyretic medications without
consulting a doctor, some of these medications may be harmful to pregnancy, and
not only lowering the fever, but also the condition that causes the fever. The
most common causes of increased fever during pregnancy are urinary tract
infections, influenza and similar upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea.
To prevent such infections during pregnancy, the mother-to-be should drink
plenty of water, eat a balanced diet, avoid close contact with people with the
infection, pay attention to hygiene, and avoid foods such as uncooked meat and
eggs.
Can high
fever harm pregnancy?
In short, yes. Various studies have been conducted on high
fever that may have some bad effects during pregnancy. High fever is more
dangerous especially in the first months of pregnancy. Also, the factor that
sometimes hurts the baby may be an infection that causes high fever rather than
high fever itself. For example, a mother who had rubella during pregnancy is at
high risk of serious harm to the baby due to the rubella virus itself, apart
from high fever.
What
problems can be caused by high fever in pregnancy:
There are studies that doubt that high fever may cause
miscarriage in the first months of pregnancy, but there are also studies
showing that it does not cause miscarriage. So this issue is not clear, more
studies are needed to clarify whether high fever is causing miscarriage.
- It can cause nervous system anomalies called neural tube
defect. These are anomalies such as openness in the baby's back and no brain
development. Since the nervous system called neural tube closes from the
beginning of the 6th week of pregnancy, high fever after this week may not
cause neural tube defects. Whether there is neural tube defect in the later
months of pregnancy after a febrile illness can be understood by
ultrasonography and blood analysis called AFP.
- Although not all studies have proved this, it has been
reported that high fever may be related to heart anomalies, cleft palate-lip
anomalies.
If you have high fever while breastfeeding, you do not need
to stop breastfeeding. Only by constantly washing your hands, taking care of
hygiene and not breathing towards the baby's face, you should take precautions
to prevent the baby from passing. Of course, you need to consult a doctor for
the cause and treatment of high fever.
