SWELLING ON THE HANDS IN PREGNANCY

One of the common complaints during pregnancy is swelling especially on the feet and hands. It is not very common in the first month of pregnancy, and as the months of pregnancy progress, the frequency of swelling increases. It most often occurs on the feet, ankles. It is more rare in the hands. Shoes and rings can start to tighten. When the edema in the hands is very severe, carpan tunnel syndrome (nerve compression) can be seen.
What causes swelling during pregnancy? During pregnancy, the water held in the body increases, and the amount of blood in the vein increases by almost 50%. Therefore, edema may occur in tissues other than vessels. Especially in standing people, edema is more common in the feet, ankles and legs due to the effect of gravity. Swelling is more common in overweight pregnant women, not much in weak pregnant women.
Edema can sometimes accompany a condition called high blood pressure (preeclampsia) during pregnancy. In the presence of preeclampsia, there is not only edema, high blood pressure, excess protein excretion in the urine. Not every edema does not mean preeclampsia, but careful follow-up is required because pregnant women with over-edema (swelling on the face) and overweight are more likely to develop preeclampsia.
Caution: If you have symptoms such as redness, pain, temperature increase accompanying swelling in your legs and there is disproportionate swelling between both legs, it may be related to a serious condition such as vascular occlusion. In this case, consult your doctor.
What to do to reduce swelling:
The most important rule to reduce swelling is to take care not to stand up. Reaching out from time to time and putting a high pillow under the legs prevents swelling. Swelling is less common in those who exercise. Do not say that you do not drink water because there are swelling, drinking water does not increase swelling, on the contrary, drinking plenty of water is beneficial in pregnancy. Ideal to prevent swelling is neither to reduce salt nor to consume excess. The ideal is to continue consuming normal amounts of salt. Do not wear tight pants and socks, wear comfortable loose clothing. When you cannot find a chance to lie down, sit with your feet on a stool. Do not sit cross-legged.
