These tests are not tests that measure baby's intelligence,
but chromosomal anomalies whose risk is determined as a result of these tests
are diseases associated with mental retardation, such as Down syndrome
(mongolian baby, trisomy 21). There is no test directly assessing the
intelligence level of the baby in the womb. In addition, apart from the
chromosomal anomalies determined in these tests, there are a variety of
diseases that may cause mental retardation in the baby, such as hypotroid. In
other words, these tests scan only a few of the diseases that may cause mental
retardation, do not scan the others, so an infant who has normal results may be
observed because of another disease. In other words, the fact that all the results
of intelligence tests are normal does not guarantee that the baby will be
normal after birth.
When and
what weeks are intelligence tests done?
From these tests, Nuchal translucency scan test is done
between 11-14 weeks of pregnancy. The triple screening test or Quadruple blood
screening test is done between 16-20 weeks. While performing a double test, the
nuchal thickness of the fetus (NT) is also measured.
As with most tests, there is a certain amount of error in
these tests. In other words, there is a possibility that a baby that looks
normal as a result of these tests may actually be sick. Conversely, a baby who
looks abnormal in these tests also has the risk of being normal. Of course, the
rate of tests showing the truth is higher than the rate of showing wrong. For
this reason, methods such as amniocentesis or CVS are used to convert the
results in these tests to the final result. You can find detailed information
on the reliability rates of these tests and other issues from the links below.
Screening
for twin, triplet and other multiple pregnancies:
Nuchal translucency scan test, The triple screening test,
Quadruple blood screening test cannot be applied in twin, triplet and other
multiple pregnancies due to failure. Instead, nuchal thickness (NT) measurement
is used in these pregnancies for screening.
