The weight that should normally be taken from the beginning
of pregnancy to the birth is 9-12 pounds. Mothers who are weak at the beginning
of pregnancy can gain a little more 15-17 pounds. Mothers who are overweight at
the beginning of pregnancy are also not recommended to gain excess weight, and
it is generally considered sufficient to gain 7-8 pounds. Despite these
approximate explanations, the weight you need to gain may vary depending on
factors such as your health, weight and baby's condition. Therefore, you should
consult your doctor. For example, more weight is gained in twin pregnancies.
The important thing is to give birth at a normal weight by getting the
appropriate amount and regular weight during pregnancy, and to regain its old
form by losing these weight correctly after birth. The first condition for this
is to start pregnancy at a normal weight. For this reason, we recommend that
mothers who are overweight should reach their normal weight by contacting the
dietitian and exercising and after that they become pregnant. Because more
weight will be added more frequently during pregnancy, which may create various
bad effects related to pregnancy and childbirth. Excess weight should be given
before pregnancy. Slimming is not recommended for those who are overweight
during pregnancy. It is also beneficial for expectant mothers who were too weak
before pregnancy to become pregnant after returning to normal weight with a
balanced diet.
How do you know if your weight is normal? Over or under
weight is calculated according to body mass index (BMI, BMI). Calculating the
body mass index is simple. To calculate BMI, you need to divide your weight by
the square of your height. BMI = kg / m2. For example, the body mass index of a
person whose height is 160 cm and weight 55 kg is calculated as 1.6x1.6 = 2.56
and 55 / 2.56 = 21.4. Those with BMI between about 19-25 are normally
overweight.
For those who fulfill the first rule, that is, whose
pregnancy begins at a suitable weight, the next rule is to reach birth by
gaining a normal amount of weight with proper, healthy diet and exercise during
pregnancy. Not all the weight gained during pregnancy is the fat stored by the
mother. Approximately 3-4 kilos of these weights are caused by 1 kg of
placenta, that is, the baby's spouse, the water of about 1 kg of baby, the
growth of 1 kg of the uterus, the increased blood amount of 1.5 kg of the
mother, 1 kg of growing breasts, the storage of water in 1-2 kg of mother. The
rest is the weight of the mother, that is, fat stores.
Sometimes expectant mothers worry about not gaining weight
from the first months of pregnancy. Since the complaints such as nausea,
vomiting, anorexia, and disgust in the first months of pregnancy are many,
weight may not be gained. This is not a problem. More weight is gained after
4-5 months. It may vary according to the individual, but on average, it is
normal to take half a kilogram (sometimes none) in the first months of
pregnancy, and a half and two kilograms a month in the following months. In
order for a pregnant lady to gain weight in this way, it is enough to take an
average of 300 kilocalories per day compared to a normal person, which means a
little more than normal. Those described here are average values, so you should
decide and follow your weight gain and speed with your doctor, not alone.
