DRUGS USED IN PREGNANCY

There are some medications and vitamins that the expectant mother should routinely use even if she has no complaints during pregnancy. In addition, there are some medications used when necessary in the face of complaints and some diseases that occur during pregnancy. Not all medicines used in normal people can be used easily during pregnancy because most of the medicines can pass from the placenta to the baby and harm the baby. Some drugs, on the other hand, do not harm the baby or even if it passes, it may even be useful. For this reason, even the simplest drug, including vitamins, should never be used without consulting a doctor.
Vitamins used in pregnancy:
The vitamin that must be used during pregnancy is FOLIC ACID. In fact, the most correct and beneficial thing is to start using folic acid before pregnancy but not after pregnancy. It is recommended to use folic acid at least 3 months before conception and to continue until the 3rd month after pregnancy occurs. Therefore, the person planning a pregnancy should start taking folic acid before becoming pregnant. Folic acid is for the prevention of anomaly called neural tube defect in the baby. Normally, 0.4 mg (400 mcg) of folic acid is sufficient per day, while those who had a baby with a neural tube defect and were in the risk group (those using epilepsy, diabetics using insulin) should be 4 mg (4000 mcg). If folic acid is forgotten 1-2 days in between, it is not a problem, but it is recommended to take it regularly every day.
Vitamins other than folic acid and MULTIVITAMIN preparations are not necessarily used in pregnancy. These drugs are widely available on the market and are widely used for pregnancy use. However, these multivitamin drugs are not required to be used unless there is a serious nutritional defect in the mother and their benefits are not shown. There is no harm in their use. It may be inconvenient to take these vitamins more than once a day, so you should not take more than your doctor recommends because some vitamins can harm the baby. For example, vitamin A. Therefore, vitamins such as vitamin A are found in low doses in vitamin drugs produced for pregnant women. These vitamin medications can cause stomach upset from time to time.
Other drugs:
It is strongly recommended that IRON DRUGS be used until birth, even if there is no anemia during pregnancy. Pregnancy is a predisposition to anemia, and there is also blood loss during childbirth. Iron preparations prevent this anemia.
Apart from these, one group of drugs commonly used in pregnancy are MAGNESIUM and CALCIUM preparations. These drugs are not required to be used during pregnancy, but there is no problem in using them. They are not one of the drugs recommended for routine use in every pregnant woman. They are generally preferred when there are mild contractions and cramps.
Drugs containing PROGESTERON hormone, which are frequently used in pregnancy, are not recommended for routine use in every pregnant woman. However, it is used in cases where the doctor deems appropriate, such as bleeding and miscarriage. Even in preventing miscarriages, they are not proven drugs.
PAIN CUTTERS in pregnancy is not a group of drugs that can be used easily. Generally and unless necessary, painkillers are not used in pregnancy except paracetamol derivatives. The majority of them have potential harmful effects on the fetus. Therefore, do not use any pain medication without consulting your doctor during pregnancy.
Apart from these, since the complaints of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy are common, medications for these are prescribed by the doctor if necessary. Urinary tract infection, which is a common condition during pregnancy, may sometimes require medication. If the mother has diseases such as goiter, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, migraine, medicines for these are recommended by doctors who are experts in the subject. These drugs are selected from drugs that do not have any harm to pregnancy or that may have the least harm.
