The substance called omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid.
These are essential fatty acids, they cannot be produced in the human body,
they must be taken from the outside. In other words, they are the necessary
substances used not only in pregnant women, but in the body of every person.
Omega 3 is important for the health of both mother and baby. Omega 3 is mostly
found in fish, tuna, anchovy and green vegetables, walnuts, sunflower. The
fetus meets the need for omega 3 from the nutrients the mother receives. If the
mother cannot get enough omega 3 with the nutrients, then the fetus gets the
need from the mother's stores. The most important omega 3 depot in the mother
is brain tissue, so it is mentioned in the researches that if the nutrients are
not taken enough, the mother may lose brain tissue.
There are 3 types of omega 3 fatty acids. These are
Docosahexanoic Acid (DHA), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), Eicosapentaenoic acid
(EPA).
The effects of omega 3 on the baby in general are on the
brain, eye and nervous system of the fetus. There are studies in the mother
that it prevents conditions such as preeclampsia (pregnancy poisoning-high
blood pressure), postpartum depression and preterm birth. In some studies, a
decrease in the birth weight of babies was observed in omega 3 deficiency.
Also, preterm birth and postpartum depression increased. It was observed that
mental and physical skills increased in babies whose mother used omega 3 during
pregnancy. In fact, there are studies showing that the risk of breast and
prostate cancer decreases in these babies in their future lives.
It is recommended to take 250 mcg omega 3 a day during
pregnancy. Since the brain and nerve development of the baby is especially in
the last 3 months of pregnancy, it is recommended to take omega 3 in these
months. It is also recommended to take omega 3 for 3 months while breastfeeding
after giving birth.
There are findings that when fish oil is taken in excess, it
increases the tendency to bleed. Therefore, it may be inconvenient to use in
patients who use blood thinners.
Omega 3 can be obtained from fish, vegetables and walnuts, as
well as tablets containing omega 3 are available in the market. Only some of
these tablets are made from fish liver (cod liver oil). Avoiding these can be
beneficial because they contain excessive amounts of vitamin A and vitamin A is
harmful to the baby in high doses. During pregnancy, fish oil tablets produced
from the body of the fish (fish body oil) can be used. Based on the general
rule of everything is natural, omega 3 is recommended to be taken naturally
like many other substances, but omega 3 tablets may be recommended for people
who cannot get enough naturally. Eating fish twice a week, eating spinach and
similar vegetable dishes twice a week, eating 1-2 walnuts a day is enough to
get enough omega 3. At some point in fish consumption, it is preferable to
small and medium-sized fish instead of large fish, because large fish are
abundant in mercury, which is harmful for the fetus. Canned tuna can be
consumed provided that it is not more than two times a week. The ideal amount
recommended for other fish is twice a week, no more. Because fish may contain
mercury and excessive mercury in pregnant women is harmful to the fetus.
