Biophysical profile (BPP) is one of the tests to determine
the well-being of the fetus. Other tests to determine the well-being of the
fetus are ultrasound, measurement of amniotic fluid, doppler measurements, NST,
OCT. These tests are carried out to understand whether the fetus is in
distress, in other words, and its condition in the uterus. Depending on the
results of these tests, it may be necessary to decide whether to continue or
terminate the pregnancy.
NST is taken for the biophysical profile and ultrasound is
performed for 30 minutes. Baby's movements, muscle tone, breathing and amount
of amniotic fluid are evaluated on ultrasound.
Conditions
in which the well-being of the fetus should be evaluated:
- Feeling low fetal movements
- Early membrane rupture
- Amnion fluid is more or less
- IUGR (Development retardation in the fetus)
- Isoimmunization (Blood incompatibility)
- Fetal anomalies
- Multiple pregnancies
- Abnormal or irregular fetal heart beats
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Kidney diseases
- Collagen tissue diseases
- Heart diseases
- Thyrotoxicosis (disorder in goiter tests)
- Hemoglobinopathies
- Anemia
Biophysical
profile criteria:
NST (Non stress test): Reagent gets 2 points, if not 0
points.
Respiratory movements of the fetus: If there are 3
respiratory movements in 30 minutes, it gets 2 points, otherwise it gets 0
points.
Tonus of the fetus: It is understood when the fetus opens its
arms and spine and gets 2 points.
Amnion fluid volume: If more than 50, it gets 2 points.
Movements of the fetus: 2 or more movements in 30 minutes
takes 2 points.
By looking at these criteria, 0 or 2 points are given for
each criterion and if the total is 8 or more, the condition of the fetus is
evaluated as good. In cases where scores of 6 and below are obtained, there may
be a state of distress in the fetus.
Factors
that may affect the biophysical profile:
- These criteria may affect the biophysical profile and cause
the test to score lower than normal.
- Mother's sedating medication
- Indomethacin use
- Cigaret
- Mother's blood sugar low
- Making steroids to the mother for the purpose of lung
development of the baby
- The mother's use of exfoliating medication (theophylline)
- Mother's use of cocaine
- AMNIUM FLUID MEASUREMENT
- AMINOSYNTHESIS
- CORDOCENTESİS
- CHORİONİC VİLLUS SAMPLİNG (CVS)
- NST (NONSTRES TEST)
