SURGERY IN PREGNANCY

Surgery may be required for various reasons during pregnancy. These operations may be pregnancy related operations or operations related to other diseases unrelated to pregnancy. It is also possible to divide these surgeries into two as urgent and planned ones.
Examples of operations related to pregnancy: Suturing into the cervix (Mc Donalds, cervical cerclage), ectopic pregnancy surgery, cesarean ...
Examples of gynecological surgeries, ovarian torsion surgeries, pelvic abscess surgery are examples.
It is the most common appendicitis surgery performed during pregnancy, which is not related to pregnancy. Apart from this, many surgeries such as stomach perforation, intestine, hemorrhoid gall bladder can be performed. There are also mandatory surgeries despite emergency pregnancy, such as traffic accidents, trauma, cutting tool injuries, firearm injuries, fractures, orthopedic and neurosurgical surgeries. In approximately 1-2% of pregnant women, surgery is required due to a reason not related to pregnancy during pregnancy.
Is surgery risky during pregnancy?
Surgery during pregnancy may have some risks for mother and baby. Of course, this is a risk that varies according to the type of surgery performed and when it is performed during pregnancy. There is a low risk of surgery in the first 3 months of pregnancy. There is also a risk of preterm labor in the last 3 months, and therefore the most preferred period for non-urgent planned operations is 3 months in the middle of pregnancy, namely 4, 5, 6 months. The type of surgery is also important for risk. For example, an appendicitis surgery is more risky than hemorrhoid surgery. Small surgeries that do not concern the abdominal region are more risk-free for pregnancy.
During pregnancy, surgeries can be performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia. It is planned according to the state of the surgery and the disease. In addition, some surgeries can be performed laparoscopically (by closed method). For example, appendicitis surgery, gallbladder surgery, ovarian cyst surgery.
In summary, surgery is not performed unless it is mandatory during pregnancy and postponed after delivery. If it is not possible to postpone it after the birth, the first 3 months can be expected to be completed and can be done in the 4th, 5th, and 6th months. However, it is not possible to postpone it in some surgeries. In these cases, the operation is performed by sharing the necessity of the surgery and the risks it may cause on pregnancy with the family.
